  Properly cleaning your bike before the sale can add hundreds of rands to its value. You're more likely to sell a machine that looks loved. Start with a basic wash first and make those tyres shine. Still looking untidy? Seek out any rust and corrosion and take care of that. Next, look to remove excess grease and oil, particularly in the chain area. You're now ready to take photos of your bike. Finally, make sure the oil and water levels are topped up and help your sale by filling up the fuel tank too. Dig out all the documents for the bike and place them into a single folder.

  Two things to consider here - what to write about your bike and what price to sell it at. Our system helps you fill out the basics but you need to think about the extra details which potential owners need to know - this is your chance to really sell it while being honest about its condition. You'll need to know the year of registration and mileage. Your images will show the condition of the bike and the more you upload the better. Next decide on your price by using our search engine to see what other private sellers and the trade are asking for bargain bikes similar to yours.   Pricing

  • Often it is difficult to decide what your bike is actually worth. If you set the price too high you will have a long sale, few prospects and numerous missed opportunities.
  • Similarly setting the price too will guarantee a quick sale, lots of prospects but can mean you could lose out on a potentially higher sale.  The key is to set the price just above what you are willing to accept, leaving room for customers to negotiate.

  Buyers will be keen to negotiate on your asking price so have your lowest price in mind and stick to it. For a bargain bike less than R10 000, it's likely you'll take cash as payment. Check for forged notes using a Counterfeit Detection pen. If the buyer doesn't want to pay by cash then an electronic transfer into your bank account is preferable to a cheque. Personal cheques can be cancelled by the buyer or written without the available funds in the account. Never hand over the bike until payment has gone through.

  Documents

  It's easy to be daunted by the various bits of paperwork that accompany your bike, but there's nothing to be frightened of. Once the deal has been sealed, you'll need to write a receipt acknowledging the following information:

  • The date
  • The amount paid
  • The make and model of bike sold
  • The bike's registration
  • The names and addresses of buyer and seller

  Make two copies of the receipt; one for you and one for the buyer. The most important thing for you to do next is to fill out a transfer of ownership forms and send it off to the Licensing Department; Telling the Licensing Department that the bike has a new owner means you won't be liable for any fines racked up after the sale.
  Finish off by handing over any other useful documentation such as:

  • The bike's handbook and service records
  • The RWC certificate
  • Any paperwork that relates to the bike's warranty, if it still has one
